The winner of the Ayr Gold Cup 2010 is outsider Redford, giving trainer David Nicholls a surprising reason to celebrate on Saturday 18th September. Five-year-old Redford triumphed over a voracious field of 26, treating jockey Frankie Dettori to a flawless six furlong ride.

Dettori decided to hold Redford back for the better part of the Ayr Gold Cup, keeping his mount steady at the back of the stand side part of the field, calmly biding his time and waiting for his chance. The early front runners in the Ayr Gold Cup included Striking Spirit, Redford’s stable mate at David Nicholls’ training facility, ridden by Tim O Shea.
Redford moved forward smoothly as the final furlong was approaching, switching to the left side of the track when Dettori spotted an opening in the front lines, and seemingly effortlessly made his way to the head of the field. He left behind stable mate Victoire De Lyphar, ridden by Andrew Nicholls, the second favourite in the Ayr Gold Cup, leaving him to collect the runner up 2 ½ lengths behind Redford. Hitchens, from the stables of David Barron, ran to a valiant third place despite being priced 20-1 by Bet365.
Redford’s connections are obviously delighted by his victory and are already thinking about his future endeavours. After his victory in the Ayr Gold Cup, Redford is now scheduled to appear in the Challenge Cup Heritage Handicap at Ascot Racecourse on September 25th.
